The Victorian Roller Derby League (VRDL) is a Roller Derby league founded in Melbourne at the start of 2007. Within a few years VRDL has made their way to the top teams in the WFTDA. Victoria has had three undefeated years attending at the Big O tournament in Eugene, Oregon and in 2015 they were the first non-US team with the medal placing (bronze) in the prestigious WFTDA Championships. Currently ranked #2 in the world, Victoria have made multiple self-funded trips to America to maintain their Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) ranking.
VRDL has three travel teams, juniors and two home teams, and it organises Learn To Skate and Learn To Derby courses for beginner and intermediate levels.
We continue to be proudly 100% skater owned and run!
VRDL – A BRIEF HISTORY
VRDL’s Travel Team attended and won the first ever Australian/New Zealand tournament – The Great Southern Slam – in 2010! By the end of the year, our sellout bouts necessitated a move to a larger venue for our Grand Final: the Grand Pavilion at the Flemington Showgrounds.
In 2011, VRDL became Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) apprentices and hosted two sell-out international bouts; against the Texas Roller Girls in July and the Rat City All Stars from Seattle in November. In December, we graduated from our apprenticeship and became the first Southern Hemisphere league to become full members of the WFTDA.
In 2012, growing numbers prompted the league to expand to four home teams and two levels of skater development. In April, the All Stars competed in their first international tournament – the Dust Devil tournament in Tucson, Arizona. The All Stars took the U.S. by surprise by winning three out of four games, placing 5th overall and firmly placing VRDL on the world map.
Back on Australian soil, the All Stars followed up their 2010 win at the Great Southern Slam and brought home the Golden Thong once again, beating rivals Sun State Roller Girls.
May 2013 was a huge month for Australian roller derby, when the VRDL All Stars took The Big O tournament in Oregon, USA, by storm. The All Stars won four from four games, a historic result that saw them climb from #38 worldwide. The following year, the All Stars smashed their way through The Big O, making it to the WFTDA playoffs. VRDL secured a worldwide ranking of #5.
Not a league to shy from a challenge, the VRDL All Stars hit the Great Southern Slam again in 2014 and again win Division 1 against Sun State Roller Girls.
In 2015, the All Stars have shown their metal with a successful Bont Invitational tournament and a mind-blowing victory against the Bay Area Derby Girls at The Big O. Back at home, the Queen Bees made their mark at the Queen’s Birthday Royal Rumble tournament. The league has hosted two interstate bouts, including a phenomenal Men vs. Women showdown between VRDL, our brother team Victorian Vanguard and Sydney Smash.
In 2016 VRDL was once again represented by the All Stars at the Great Southern Slam where we took home the Golden Thong, defeating Sydney Roller Derby in the Div 1 Grand Final. Earlier in the year, the All Stars flew over to Eugene, Oregon for the Big O tournament, and showed the world why we are ranked #2. Again, VRDL won four from four games.
